When Was Carlisle United Football Club Founded?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Carlisle United Football Club was founded in 1903 and was formed when the local teams of Shaddongate United and Carlisle Red Rose joined forces. This united side started out by playing their home games at Milhome Bank, then Devonshire Park before moving to Brunton Park in 1909. This remains their home ground today and has a capacity for almost 17,000 people.

In the season of 1905/06, the club started in the Lancashire Combination league in Division Two. By 1928, they had joined the Football League in Division Three North.

Carlisle United have frequently been linked with a move to the Scottish Football League due to their close proximity to the border of Scotland. This is now extremely unlikely to happen, as Carlisle were champions of League Two in 2005/06 season and therefore gained automatic promotion to the League One division. They are led by their new manager Neil McDonald.
