How Do Bike Brakes Work?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

There are many types of brakes for bicycles, but the most commonly-used type of bicycle brake is the rim brake. Rim brakes can be used to stop most tandem bicycles (as well as some solo bicycles).

Like all bicycle brakes, rim brakes can be used to stop any type of bicycle if the brakes are in a good condition and are properly adjusted. Rim brakes for bicycles are basically designed for the purpose of powerful stopping.

Rim brakes have greater momentum, and this reduces the margin for errors in the set-up of the brakes. There are a number of situations in which the power of the brakes of a bicycle may prove to be inadequate. It may be inadequate if the brakes are not adjusted properly or the quality of the brake shoes is poor.
