What Was The French Fourth Republic?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The establishment of the French Fourth Republic took place after World War II, lasting from 1946 and 1958. It was governed by means of the fourth republican constitution, which France adopted on October 13, 1946.

France had to struggle in order to uphold it's economic as well as its political status as a leading nation state. Even though France tried to maintain its colonial empire, before long it ran into trouble. The heights of the ineffectiveness and instability of this Republic was seen in the1958 Algerian Crisis. Being the weak and unstable, in the year 1958 the Fourth Republic was forced to yield to the Fifth Republic. It was Charles De Gaulle who initiated this Fifth Republic. This newly established Republic had a strengthened Presidency.
