The best mattress is the one that fits your bodyshape, weight and price-range. I can hands down say that Hastens beds are probably the best in the world. These are very expensive, but they are well worth the price. Go to [[EXT LINK:www.Hastens.com
I agree that the memory foam mattresses are a good product, but it takes time to get used to the new feeling. You see, when you move around on in a bed like that, it doesn't instantly give for your body - there's a short, negligible delay in conforming to your body and I don't like it. Again, it's a matter of getting used to the new feeling.
I used to have a Spring Air bed before, and that was a very good bed, as well. I think that the main guideline should be that you have a firm mattress with the pillowtop or foam top softness of your choice, unless you use memory foam.
Another thing to consider, is activities; how will it be having sex in the bed? Think about how the bed reacts to certain positions. For example; in the missionary, as a man, you might get more tired holding yourself up if you are using a very soft pillowtop. It's like the effect of running on a sports mattress - it saps your strength very quickly.

Brand. Because when a brand is expensive. It means it's sure to be strong and comfy for sleeping. I would prefer Tempurpedic, because you feel like your sleeping on a cloud (I've never slept on a cloud, but I can imagine it would feel like sleeping on a Tempurpedic mattress) There are absolutely NO pressure points whatsoever!
Also I think the Stearns and Foster brand is the best and pricey. They make a nice firm mattress with good support yet it gives where it needs to. I think they use them in nicer hotels.
