Diesel engines gradually eclipsed those powered by condensation as the manufacturing and operational efficiencies of the previous made them cheaper to own and operate. While early costs of diesel engines were high, vapor locomotives were routine made for specific railway routes and lines, and as such economies of scale were difficult to accomplish. Though added multipart to produce with rigorous built-up tolerances (1/10,000th of an inch (0.0025 mm) vs. 1/100th of an inch (0.25 mm) for steam), diesel engine parts were more conducive to mass production. As such, while the haze engine maker Baldwin vacant almost five hundred fog models in its heyday, Electro-Motive available less than ten diesel varieties. [13]

Diesel locomotives offer important in service advantages over steam locomotives. They can safely be operated by one person, making them perfect for switch/shunting duties in yards (although for security reasons many main-line diesel locomotives go on to include 2-man crews), and the in service setting is much more nice-looking, being much quieter, fully long-lasting and with no the dirt and heat that is an foreseeable part of operating a steam train.

A diesel is easier to drive since no fireman is needed to continuously feed the fire
