Can I Wire Wall Sconces To Existing Outlet(s) Near Floor, And Can Switch Be Added To That Outlet? Contractor Says Additional Wiring, Traditional Switch Box Must Be Added From Existing Wiring Above, Which Is Very Expensive.

Moving into new construction, former warehouse office building, open concept. 8 ft bedroom/den walls do not meet 12 foot ceiling. I want to install sconces on den wall by using existing outlet near floor, and not have to run connecting wire from ceiling wiring, which would mean about four feet of visible vertical wire cable being dropped from ceiling to run into lower wall. Can this be done by snaking sconce wiring to existing outlet, and can switch be added to existing outlet even if it is near the floor? Thanks. Kathy O

I presume you mean power outlet sockets at floor level? If yes, then in theory this can be done. However, you will still need channeling or surface trunking down the walls because I assume the sockets are all at floor level and will not be going 'up the wall'. A switch can be placed at the side to operate the socket.

Thanks for your prompt answer, Mr. E...Question (because I'm electrical knowledge/application challenged): can you translate your response re what can I tell my contractor to "do" in terms of an action he will direct the electrician to take. Tnx. K
