Sandra (Nerys Hughes) is the "posh one" of the Liver Birds. The audience soon discovers that she gets this from her mother, Mrs Hutchinson, played by Mollie Sugden at her most imposing. Mrs Hutchinson wears a succession of awe-inspiring hats, refuses to carry cash on the grounds that the Queen doesn't (in one scene she writes out a cheque for 50p) and is full of social ambitions for her meek daughter. Especially in later series, which Carl Lane scripted alone, a lot of the comedy derives from the interaction of Mrs Hutchinson with the rowdy and "common" Boswells, the family of Sandra's red-haired, jumpsuit-wearing and boyfriend-seeking flatmate Carol (Elizabeth Etensen.) The Boswells, who would later be the basis of another series, "Bread," constantly shock Mrs Hutchinson, either through Mrs Boswell's gin-drinking or her brother Lucien's eccentricity (he is perpetually depressed and lives only for his large collection of pet rabbits.)
