A theory is an educated thought or explanation for the way something works. This is usually backed up by some method of showing how it could be true. Most people will confused theory with just an educated guess, when it is much more than that. Though they do have reason to be believed, it is not uncommon that a theory can be disproved several generations after it has been discovered.
