    Chaucer is the last name of a famous and well known English author. His full name was Geoffrey Chaucer. He was also a poet, philosopher, bureaucrat and a diplomat. He is remembered for his work titled The Canterbury Tales. He lived before the time of William Shakespeare. He is known for his literary contributions to English when the norm was to write in Anglo-Norman or Latin. Canterbury Tales is considered as a great work of world literature.

    London was the birthplace of Chaucer. The name Chaucer is a word with French origins and meant shoemaker. His entire life revolves around the English courts and the centre of its power because he hailed form a wealthy merchant family. He is at times known as the father of English Literature because he gave precedence to English over Latin and French. He also wrote several other works like The Book of the Duchess, Anelide and Arcite and The House of Fame.
