What's The Best Way To Grow Lavender?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Who doesn't like the soothing scent of lavender?  The plants are extremely popular for use in bath, cosmetic and home products. However, lavender has a reputation for being slightly tricky to grow. Some gardeners say the most important thing to remember is that lavender doesn't like getting its feet wet.  It explains why lavender thrives in the dry climate of the Mediterranean.  Well-drained soil works best. Planting the plants far enough apart to allow adequate ventilation is a helpful hint.

Some gardeners prefer to start lavender in a pot where moisture levels can be monitored. Keeping the plant indoors has the added bonus of scenting the home.  It's important not to over water the potted plant to prevent root rot. If the soil is dry to the touch, the plant needs water.

There are around 20 varieties of lavender, and a number that thrive in the UK, despite our wet and not exactly sun-filled climate!  Hidcote and Munstead are two popular hardy types. Lavender only needs a little extra care to discourage excess moisture. It also can't hurt to plant a few extra plants for insurance. The plant should be planted in the spring and can be propagated by cuttings in the late summer.
