How Does One Divide The Globe In Order To Have Eastern And Western Hemisphere?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

If the Northern and Southern Hemispheres are separated by a circle known as the equator, the Eastern and Western Hemispheres are separated by the circle you get if you connect the Prime Meridian (ie: 0 degrees longitude, the line that goes through Greenwich, London, UK, hence the term "Greenwich Mean Time") and 180 degrees longitude, which is where most of the International Date Line lies (except for a few diversions here and there to stop countries & islands getting split into two different dates).

So, using standard international co-ordinates for latitude and longitude, any location that is measured as "degrees East" is in the Eastern Hemisphere, and locations that specify "degrees West" are in, you guessed it, the Western Hemisphere (just like the "degrees North" and "degrees South" latitude measurements denote the  Northern and Southern Hemispheres, respectively).

Geographically, this puts most of Europe & Africa, Asia, and Oceania in the Eastern Hemisphere, and North & South America in the Western Hemisphere.
