What Is Cinco De Mayo?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Cinco de Mayo is a national holiday in Mexico. It is celebrated with a lot of fanfare in the United States of America. Cinco de Mayo when loosely translated to English means the 'Fifth of May', so the holiday is on the 5th of May every year. This day is observed as a national holiday because on 5th of May, 1862, the Battle of Puebla was won by the Mexican forces by defeating the French army. The holiday is widely celebrated in the state of Puebla, Mexico. There is a lot of music, dancing, food and drinks involved. People of all age celebrate on this day. U.S.A. does not mark this day as an official holiday but it is celebrated all over the country.

Thanks for the answer because my friend is having a big bash for this holiday and I wanted to know what it really meant. We are African American, but there will be Spanish Americans present to celebrate with us. You thoroughly explained it all. We also had to find out what our English names represented in Spanish; I think I said it right, if not blame it on my head not my heart. Just like I meant my name to be elegance, not eloquence. No, I do not care to explain now; so, what's done is done.
