How Common Is Depression?

Answer Question

It has been estimated that between 1 in 3 and 1 in 6 people in the UK will suffer at least one bout of clinical depression in their lives.   Depression is the most common form of mental illness between the ages of 25 and 44.   It's believed that somewhere between 10 and 18% of adults are suffering at least mild depression at any one time.  It's very hard to get accurate statistics because many people do not seek treatment, and many are not properly diagnosed.  For instance, one study found that 40% of adults suffering from depression were not recognised as having the condition by their GPs.

It's thought that 15% of people over age 65 have depression; the incidence of the condition increases with age.    Depression in young people exists but is often better hidden.  Self-harming and attempting suicide may be the first or only external sign of depressive illness in young people.  Self-harm is more common in women while suicide is more common in men (especially young men).
