Good question. Germany surrendered and the Allies putatively won, but France was devastated for two generations (witness the collapse of 1940) and the reparations and loss of European and colonial territories was so stinging for Germany that Hitler's rise to power was almost inevitable.

WWI, WWII -- same war, really.

To answer the question: The myth Americans are taught is that our arms won the war in 1918. The fact is, Britain and France would have won without us. The British blockade of Germany was so effective, the German army so worn down, and the manpower of the British empire so immense Germany would never have lasted.

If the war had dragged on until 1919 or 1920, Germany would have had enough of war and I think Hitler would never have come to power.

In this way of thinking, Allied success, and the American contribution, only caused more war.
