Baker Island is an uninhabited coral island situated in the Central Pacific Ocean about 40 miles north of the equator; the surface area of the island is about 1.64 sq km (405 acres). The atoll along with the neighboring islands of Howland and Jarvis are part of the unincorporated territories of the United States grouped under the Minor Outlying Islands designation.

Baker Island lies about 1600 miles south west of Hawaii and is managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service from Honolulu, Hawaii which has given the island the status of a National Wildlife Refuge on account of the its being a nesting site of several species of birds like the masked booby while the outlying submerged lands of the atoll are home to a large diversity of marine species like turtles.

The island which was formerly a guano mining site is at presented a protected area and only scientists having special permits issued by the US Fish and Wildlife Service are allowed access to the islands.
