What Is China?

Answer Question

If you mean the country of China, it's the world's most densely populated country with 1.34 billion inhabitants. It has a mix of populations but the most numerous are the Han Chinese. The current president is Hu Jintao; the capital city is Beijing.
China has a very ancient culture going back over 4000 years, and has had a written language for at least 3,500 years. Gunpowder, paper and printing are some Chinese inventions.
For much of its history China was ruled by a succession of powerful families, who later became emperors. These families include the Qin dynasty (in the 2nd century BC) under whose rule work began on the famous GReat Wall of China; and the 13th century Ming dynasty, during whose reign many famous artifacts were produced.
In the 19th  and 20th centuries China became more vulnerable to outside forces including those of unrest and rebellion. In the 20th century, after a series of rebellions and revolutions, as well as intense fighting with Japan in World War II, in 1949 it became officially a Communist country under Chairman Mao Zedong. This is still officially the case, but today China is in fact a leading industrial nation. You can learn more about modern China here.
