When Do Snakes Dance?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Despite of being one of the most poisonous and perilous creatures in the world, snakes are quite famous all around the world for their proverbial dancing skills.  On a common front, there are basically two occasions when a snake would like to display its dancing skills.  And both of the occasions are somewhere or the other connected to the mating season of snakes.

In the first situation, both of the dancing partners are male and their beguiling waltz is an attempt on the behalf of the male snakes to attract their female counterparts – it is somewhat aggressive in nature.  In divergence to the whilom case, the second condition that encourages snakes to dance is a nuptial one that is it is a dance where the dance partners are both male and female.  Initially the act of persuasion perpetuates between the snakes and they coil together.  Then the couple, while being still coiled, raise their heads forming the shape of the letter U.  The dance that usually lasts an hour, the male snake tends to rub its chin against the female's neck as if culminating the act of persuasion.

The first dance is usually seen all over the world specially among rattlesnakes, adders and cobras.
