I would suggest you to buy a rented DVD of your favourite movie and then write or burn the copies to a blank DVD. You can also search for shops which specialise in transferring the data from your VHS onto a DVD. You will need to copy the video to the computer in the form of an MPEG-2 file with the help of a hardware capture device that has the ability to convert VHS to MPEG-2. This will be done with the help of a converter which 'converts' analog to digital signals. Once this is done, you can burn the file onto a blank DVD with burning software.
You can also hook up your VHS machine or VCR to a standalone DVD recorder that functions like a VCR. The VHS to DVD recorder supplies you with a DVD version of your tape simultaneously. It is the faster and simplest way to convert VHS to DVD.

Your first reply was right on the mark. I've tried every way to convert VHS and they all work except quality is lost. DVD decrypter and DVD shrink will make backups of DVD movies in excellent quality.
When converting VHS to DVD some quality is lost in every step. Capture is a big culprit. It would take more time than I'm willing to devote to the subject to actually document the losses but I believe capture is the biggest flaw.Second, compression costs quality. Putting 8 gigs of data onto a 4.7 Gig disk requires a lot of compression. Major corporations do it, they must have better tools than those available to the typical consumer. I've tried several compression programs, none give the desired results.Rent a DVD movie and duplicate it. VHS to DVD conversion should only be attempted for personal non replaceable video, and expect lower quality.
