Heartworm disease is caused when the adult worms get into the blood vessels of a dog's lungs. These worms make the blood vessels to swell. Since the blood vessels contract in diameter, blood flow becomes restricted. Because of this the blood pressure starts to increase and cause pulmonary hypertension. This increased vascular anxiety indicates that the right side of the dog's heart needs to work more in order to force blood through the lung. Ultimately this pressure and anxiety will cause the failure of the right heart.

Most of the heartworm-infected dogs don't show any symptoms. The symptoms of heartworm disease depend on the quantity of worms and the reaction of the infected dog. These heartworms can be present in bulk from 1 to 125 in dogs. Generally greater the amount of worms greater will be the severity of disease and the higher will be the risk for post-treatment difficulty. The ordinary symptoms of heartworm disease are
    • Respiratory distress.
    • Coughing.
    • Exercise intolerance.
    • Weight loss.

There are many latest medicines available in the market but contact your pets doctor and follow his prescription.
