Edmund Muskie or Edmund Sixtus Muskie was the Secretary of State of the United States under the administration of President Jimmy Carter. He was Secretary of State from the 8th of May 1980 until the 20th of January 1981. He became the Secretary of State after the previous one Cyrus Vance resigned from that position. He concentrated on having the American hostages in Iran released by diplomatic means for the better part of his time in office. Later he was also a member of a review board that was responsible for investigating the dealings in the Iran-Contra affair. He was once a Presidential candidate as well but lost out because of an emotional outburst related to the Canuck Letter.

Edmund Muskie, born on the 28th of March 1914, died on the 26th of March 1996 a little shy of the age of 82.
