Lake Ladoga in Russia is the largest natural lake in Europe. It is situated in Russia and covers an area of 17,600 square miles. It is 130 miles long, 80 miles wide and the maximum depth is 738 feet.
It is situated in Northwestern Russian in Republic of Karelia and Leningrad Oblast. It has approximately 660 islands most of which are on its northwestern side and the most famous among them are the Valaam. Its is fed by the tributaries River Svir, River Vuoski and River Volkhy. It drains into the Gulf of Finland in the Baltic Sea.
Earlier a border was drawn between Sweden and Russia and Finland and Russia which passed through the lake. Now it is totally in Russia. The southern shores are low and marshy and the northern shores are indented and rocky. It freezes for two months in the north and four months in the south and had autumn storms as well.
It is historically important as well. When Leningard was under siege this lake was the only way to approach it. Basic supplies were provided by trucks in winter and boats in summer. It was hence nicknamed the "Road of Life."
