There are many ways depending on how strong your friendship was with this person.
My advice is to do it in person. This way they can't hang up, block you etc. Depending on what you did talk to them and DO NOT BEG tell them that you are sorry what you did was wrong. . Etc.
I advise you to say what you feel and if your friendship was really and truly strong, you will be able to get through this.
