I've actually heard that an older version can be found and it was Greco-Egyptian. The story was first recorded by Greek historian Strabo in the first century BC.

Although Cinderella wasn't actually named Cinderella, she was called Rhodopis, the story follows the same plot as the Cinderella we know.

So if you're looking for who wrote the original story, Strabo is your answer. If you're looking for who started using the name "Cinderella", petrutiu might be right.

Charles Perrault wrote the story of Cinderella as we know it today.  He wrote it in 1697 along with: "Little Red Ridinghood," "Sleeping Beauty,"  "Puss in Boots," "Bluebeard," "Hop O' My Thumb".
