Karachi is the largest city in Pakistan.
Considered as the commercial and financial hub of the country, Karachi is a city which has its richest history. Started as a harbour city mainly inhibited by Fishers, Karachi being on the bank of Arabic Sea soon caught the attention of merchants of the area specially its Indian Gujarat which is the next neighbouring harbour of India.

Karachi has started as a small sea port where the main activities of its inhabitants was fishing until Britain started to develop it on more modern lines and because of its strategic location it soon became the city bustling with merchants travelled from all over the globe.

When Pakistan got independence, Karachi being the commercial hub of that time was chosen as the capital of a newly born country and it gradually started to transform itself into truly an international city with most modern facilities at its disposal.

Though Karachi being the largest city in Pakistan enjoys its reputation as the commercial hub but it also remained most volatile city in the country with on and off ethnic, religious and linguistic conflicts arising everyday. Because of its diversity Karachi is one of the most loved city in the country.

Karachi is Pakistan's largest city and the capital of the country's Sindh province. It has a big seaport on the Arabian Sea and most of Pakistan's international trade and the neighbouring landlocked Afghanistan passes through the Kimari port in the city. Being a metropolitan city, it is the center of the country's financial, commercial and manufacturing activities.  Karachi's modern Quaid-e-Azam International Airport is a stopover and refuelling point for international flights. Karachi is known for its industry producing steel, chemicals, refined petroleum, machinery and processed food. The city also has a vast network of banks and a stock exchange.  It has two famous universities -- The University of Karachi and NED University of Engineering and Technology. The bomb Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, is known for its architectural uniqueness.

When the British captured the city in 1939, it was a small fishing and trade centre. Under British rule, it became the main outlet for the region's cotton and grain exports. Karachi remained the capital of Pakistan from its independence in 1947 till 1959.
During the 1980s and the early 1990s, the city witnessed violent clashes between the rival political, religious, and ethnic groups. The city's population according to the 1998 census was 9,269,265.
