How Is Sir Francis Drake Remembered?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Francis Drake, already famous as a navigator who went round the world, was knighted by his Sovereign, Queen Elizabeth1, on his return. His ship, originally called "The Pelican" was re-named "The Golden Hind" on account of Drake being sponsored by Sir Christopher Hatton, whose crest was a hind. In 1588, the King of Spain, Philip 11, mounted a huge Armada of ships in an invasion of England to rid the world of the "English harlot", Elizabeth, and install a Catholic monarch on the English throne. The Lord High Admiral of England, Lord Thomas Howard of Effingham, called together his Admiralty, and decided on a battle plan. Whilst they were doing this, the Armada was sighted! Drake, not among the Admiralty, was playing bowls on Plymouth Hoe! Told about the encroaching enemy fleet, he decided to finish his game first! He was foremost in the destruction of the Armada by his inclusion of fireships set amongst the Spanish galleons at night. Born in 1540 at Taverstock in Devon, no vestige of him remains in England!
