Be honest, but consider the other persons feelings, they are not going to want to accept this unless they feel the same way as you do.
Agree to be friends, but only with a period of grace between relationship and friendship.
Remain pleasant, even if things get tough
Expect them to look for a 'secret truth' that isn't there, Many people can't accept that the relationship is over.
Stick to your guns, breaking up with someone is significant, don't go back, just to make them feel better.

Mess with their head, tell them you might want them back or kiss them. Never string them along.
Shove someone else in their face if you start dating someone else.
Text or call them when you get drunk
