A Local Area Network (LAN) is a network to connect computers, within a limited area such as your house.  On the LAN, you might have your computer, other family member's computers and perhaps a printer and a TIVO.  You would also have a router to switch signals around to various places, and modem to connect to the internet.

This is in contrast to a WAN, or Wide Area Network.  The internet is an example of a Wide Area Network.  People that work at a company might have a SAN, or Storage Area Network, where large storage systems are attached.

So your LAN is just a way to connect a bunch of computers together and share an internet connection.
