In the United States, obesity is an epidemic. According to a 2001 survey conducted on the basis of age groups, 14 per cent of Americans in the age group of 18-29, 14 per cent of Americans in the age group of 18-29, 20.5 per cent in the age group of 30-39, 24.7 per cent in the age group of 40-49, 26.1 in the age group of 50-59, 25.3 per cent in the age group of 60-69 and 17.1 per cent in the age group of 70-plus were found to be obese. That is to say, on an average, 22 out of every 100 Americans are obese.
In terms of race and ethnicity, 19.6 per cent of whites (non-Hispanic), 31.1 per cent of African-Americans (non-Hispanic), 23.7 per cent of Hispanics and 15.7 per cent of people of other races and ethnicities were found to be obese. That is to say, on an average, 23 out of every 100 Americans are obese.
