When Was The Vietnam War And Why Did It Happen?

The Vietnam War was fought between 1964 and 1975 in South Vietnam and its borders and in bombing runs over North Vietnam.  The war's origins lie in the partition of Vietnam, after it gained independence from France in 1954, into a communist north and a non-communist south.  The communists in the north later set up the National Liberation Front (NLF - a.k.a Viet Kong) to oppose the South Vietnamese government via a guerilla war.  This prompted the U.S to send in military advisors in support of the South's government.  Meanwhile, the Soviet Union and North Vietnam were supporting the NLF with arms, supplies and even North Vietnam troops.  After the U.S senate supported escalating the war, the first American combat troops landed in Vietnam in 1965.  The Americans' anxiety about South Vietnam falling to communism had brought them in.  Factor in the involvement of the Soviet Union on the other side (though it was never one of the military combatants) and the Vietnam War can be seen as a so-called 'proxy war', a manifestation of the indirect 'cold war' conflict between America and the Soviet Union.
