Menstrual cycle can of 26-32 days with an average of 28 days. It begins with menstrual bleeding which can last for 2-7 days. When bleeding is stopped, follicle stimulating hormone releasing hormone or FSH-RH is released by the hypothalamus which stimulates the pituitary gland to secrete follicle stimulating hormone of FSH. In response to FSH, few follicles in the ovary start to grow and secrete a hormone called estrogen while growing. Thees estrogens proliferate the linings of uterus. At the day 14, FSH-RH is topped and LH-RH is released from the hypothalamus which stimulates pituitary gland to secrete LH or lutenizing hormone. When LH is at peak, ovulation takes place. This ovulation takes place in one of the many growing follicles which attains maximum size. After the ovulation, remaining cyst of the egg secrete a hormone called progesterone. This remaining cyst is called corpus luteum. Progesterone transform the proliferated linings of uterus. In case of pregnancy, this hormonal support for the uterus continues and periods stop for 9 months of pregnancy. In case of no pregnancy, hormonal support is withdrawn and periods start again. These are few information about menstrual cycle.
