The first winter Olympics in which sixteen nations participated were held in 1924, in Chamonix in eastern France, which is very popular for its winter sports. Chamonix is renowned for its fabulous cable car that runs up to the Aiguille du Midi, and was started in 1955. 258 athletes participated in the Olympic Games held between 25 January and 5 February, 2005.

Charles Jewtraw won the first ever gold medal in the Olympic Winter games in the opening event, the 500 meter speed-skating. Norway won the highest number of medals—four gold medals, seven silver medals, and six bronze medals respectively in the 1924 Winter Olympic games that were held at the foot of Mont Blanc, which is the highest mountain at Chemonix, France in western Europe. Medals were awarded for sixteen events and seven sports.
