You get a 6 " overlap or coverage on standard ridge cap, there should be no significant over-hang

A cap, most times, is 1/3 of a shingle. A 3 tab shingle is 3' long, so the caps are 1'. If your cutting a slot in the ridge, for a ridge vent, be careful not to make it to large, or else you won't be able to nail the caps.
