What Flower Is Given The Name Of Apetalous?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A flower is made of three parts: calyx, the corolla and reproductive parts- androecium and gynoecium. The reproductive parts are enclosed in the corolla. This corolla is bright and conspicuous part of a flower.  It is inside the calyx. The calyx is leafy outer whorl of a flower and its components are called sepals. The components of corolla are called the petals and are considers to be modified leaves.

In some species of flowers, these petals are reduced or the flowers have no petals. Such flowers are called apetalous. The calyx and corolla together make up the perianth. Thus, in such flowers the perianth is much reduced. Example of apetalous flowers is grasses.

Other examples of apetalous flowers are: plants of the genus Omphalea, Sea milkwort of the family Myrsinaceae, plants of genus Thalictrum of Ranunculaceae family and Sapindaceae family.
