Having a degree in graphic design will help your chances of securing a job. Companies look for graphic designers that have quite a lot of experience, sometimes up to five years, though this is usually for senior positions.
You don't necessarily have to have a degree, but some graphic design qualification, maybe an 'A' level, may help. Courses are good as they will help you to explore all the areas of graphic design, from the design side to the more illustrative side.
Companies also look for applicants who have a wide knowledge of computers, particularly Macs. You can attend courses that will show you how to use various programs such as Photoshop, though you can actually train yourself by following the tutorials provided with the program. The program QuarkExpress is often used by graphic designers, so some knowledge of that would be useful.
Aside from knowledge, you need to have a flair for creativity, a keen eye for detail, be efficient to meet deadlines and enjoy working with computers.

You would need Art, Drafting, lots of Computer classes, design concepts, or something of that nature, as well as English or language classes to begin with.
