I read recently that it takes about 10,000 hours of practice to master a skill sufficiently that it becomes second nature. Of course, you need to (at least occasionally) practice doing it right. Practicing the wrong way won't get you there. This estimate seems to hold for a broad range of skills. It doesn't seem to matter whether you do it as a profession or as a hobby.
