Yes you would always try to put a forest fire out. Why would you want to let a fire cause all that destruction of trees and wildlife habitat ?

Forest fire actually wears out or burns out all the layers of debris and waste material which are deposited at the top of the soil's crust not allowing the basic elements such as sunlight and water to reach to them. After haing a fire on Forest, The next grass grown would be much more lush and green

You can't really STOP forest fires...Unless started by man, forest fires are natural... In a natural ecosystem they add various minerals and nutrients to the soil like carbon, as well as recycling plant material. But since very little areas of forest are in natural ecosystems anymore, they should probably be put out, or at least partially controlled by man.
