Tectonic plates are basically the earth, cut into pieces. The pieces move in three directions, Divergent boundary ( when two tectonic plates move apart, causing either seafloor spreading or rift valleys), Convergent boundary ( when two tectonic plates collide with each other, causing folded mountains or trenches) and Transform ( when two tectonic plates grind past each other in a unsteady motion, causing earthquakes). They are moved by convection currents, which is magma under the lithosphere that move the way ocean currents move.
