In past days single computer served all the organization's computational need. Now it has been replaced by the ideas of networking. Linking the different group of computers together is called networking. Different groups of computers are connected together through communication media and devices. These communication devices are cable, telephone lines, modems and other resources used in networking.

Networking is basically used to share resources such as hardware devices, software programs, data and information. Networking save large amount of time by sharing information among individuals. Electronic mails are efficient way of sending messages from one end to other end. Electronic mail is also called email. It enables us to get information quickly and make decisions and easily send management decisions to other offices. Organizations use standalone computers tend to spend a good deal of time on coping information from one computer another computer.

In networking offers fast travel of information with very less money and time. Reduces the chances of computer virus and unauthorized copy of data by using disk less workstations, that is computer like Network Terminals that have all the capabilities of a regular personal computer, except ability to copy file onto floppy disk or USB storage devices.

When we connect two or more than two computers with each other then it is called a network.
These computers can be connected with wire and can be connected without wire. if we make  a network between computers without using wire then it is called a wireless network.

The term networking is basically refers to a network between computers and we use this term in our daily life on many occasion as "networking is done in gaming cafe".

Basically we make a network between computers so that we can share files between them.
But there are many other uses of networking. We can share files with every user on a network, we can play games with each other, we can share printers and scanners, and we can do multiple task simultaneously. Now consider a scenario, you have a laptop and computer and networking is done between them. You have many heavy files on your computer as videos, films, pictures, music , animated clips, etc. Now you want to access these files on your laptop but your laptop does not have enough memory, so you cannot save these files on your laptop but you can access these files because of networking between them.

In the world of the computers, networking is the practice of just linking two or more than two computing devices together for the purpose of sharing data. Networks are built by the combination of both the computer hardware and the computer software. The networks can be categorized in so many different ways. One of the all approaches defines the type of network according to the geographic area it spans. Local area networks or the LANs, for illustration, usually reach across a single home, while the wide area networks or the WANs reach across cities, states, or even across the world.

The Internet is the largest public WAN of the world. The two major types of high-level network design are called the client-server and the peer-to-peer. The client-server networks feature centralized server computers that store email, Web pages, files and or the applications. While on a peer-to-peer network, on the other hand, all computers tend to hold up and support the same functions. The client-server networks are much more common in business and peer-to-peer networks are much more common in homes and schools. The network topology represents its layout and the structure from the point of view of the data flow.
