There are two routes to getting your "tickets", or licenses, airframe and power plant. You can go to school for 18 months, or you can work for an outfit for at least 18 months per license. But, this simply means that you would be qualified to take the FAA administered tests, the airframe, the power plant, and the general. And there are no guarantees that you'll pass the tests. But, not to worry, the tests are not very difficult. And when you pass the tests and get your license(s) issued, you have to arrange to be checked out by a more experienced mechanic, who will determine whether or not you are sufficiently proficient. And the mechanic will not try to trick you or trip you up.
As to what you need to know, airframe structures, both steel tube and wooden, dope and fabric coverings. Engine maintenance, ect.
