What Is The Connection Between Buffaloes And Buffalo Bill?

If there is a link, it is difficult to see. It would have been quite hard for Bill to do anything with Buffaloes because there aren't any in North America. There used to be quite a lot of bison until Bill and his cronies started shooting them for all they were worth. Bill alone is said to have slaughtered more than 4,000. Some place the figure is high as 4,500.
The North American bison isn't related to either of the true types of buffalo, the water buffalo, 'Bubalus', or the African buffalo, 'Syncercos'.
Today the breed is recovering from the mass slaughter. There were once, in 17th century, 60 million roaming the plains of North America. Their numbers had dropped to just a few hundred by the late 19th century. At pre4sent there are an estimated 50,000 on the range. Bison cattle crosses are bread for meat called cattalo.
