I have often heard people say this and I believe it is due to a major change in how people assess things. Instead of giving anything an assessment of worth, we tend to give an assessment of whether we like something or not. Now I don't particularly enjoy the work of Gus Van Sant, but I know that it is good work. There's a big difference.
Peoples tastes varies and of course, any form of art is likely to have its supporters and its detractors. On top of this, there is always likely to be problems between levels of competence and since it is art, there is likely to be an element of whether it was pulled off or not.
Theatre isn't rubbish, it's lively, challenging, fascinating and live. But I agree that often I pay more than I would for a cinema ticket and end up being disappointed.
