    The benchmark for success of any song in the US is the Billboard Hot 100. It is one of several charts maintained by Billboard magazine. The magazine dedicated to music ranks songs based on their popularity. Any song wishing to enter the chart will have to be popular, especially commercially.

    The popularity is ranked on the basis of:
    Sales: Sales of singles throughout the US. This is taken from a sample of all establishments selling music. After all it's only popular if people are willing to pay.
    Airtime: The amount of time a single is played over a variety of radio music channels.   
    Online sales: Sales of the singles over the internet downloaded directly by the user.

    Earlier still jukeboxes were also included in the measuring barometer.
