During menopause, women have used Hormone Replacement Treatment (HRT) to reduce the weakening of bones (known as osteoporosis). However, there has been scientific controversy over whether the benefits of HRT outweigh the risks.
Women were advised for many years to take HRT after menopause to reduce the risk of heart disease and various aspects of ageing. But, the Women's Health Initiative found that women undergoing HRT had an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease, breast cancer, heart disease and stroke.
One menopausal symptom is anxiety, which can provoke rapid heart beat, shortness of breath and palpitations. These can be a one-time event or recurring episodes. If this is diagnosed early, then it can lead to early recovery, and possibly prevent the disorder from developing into depression.
Hot flashes are another symptom and can be helped by having a healthy body. This involves following a healthy diet and an exercise program. This may not control the main cause of hot flashes, which is the hormonal imbalance, but it can help to control the intensity and frequency of them. Avoiding alcohol and spicy foods, drinking 2 quarts of water each day, stopping smoking and avoiding turtlenecks can all contribute to reducing hot flashes. There are also alternative approaches and drugs and surgery, but it is safer to opt for the least risky approach, which would be the healthy diet and exercise.
A healthy lifestyle and exercise program can also help to reduce night sweats.
