The fish sold is mainly cod and haddock, and it is generally covered in a batter of flour and water and deep fried.

Haddock is slightly more expensive than the cod, but is a lovely fish and makes a special treat.

Although originally selling mainly fish, chips and peas, more recently fish and chip shops have diversified into selling fried chicken, kebabs, sausages, and a variety of other foods, probably in response to the burgeoning fast food industry in the UK, which now offers a considerable variety of foods from the four corners of the world.
