What Legal Rights Do I Have If I Do Not Receive My Security Deposit Or A Financial Explanation Within The Alloted Tme?
My lease states that my security deposit is to be returned within 15 days of vacating the premises. Today is day 16 and my old landlord states that it may be another week or two. There are precautions set up to obtain rent should I not pay it, so do I have any legal rights to obtain my security deposit? I have yet to receive anything, including an explanation of monies being kept. Please help! Thank you.
Legal rights are stated in the lease agreement and it varies from state to state. The landlord can be held for severe penalties for not paying the rent in time so you need to consult with lawyer for your rights. But I don't recommend to go to court because such cases takes a lot of time and money. Solve the matter with mutual consent and calmness.
