Faisalabad is the second largest textile centre. It is growing at a phenomenal rate and its textile industry is expected to provide a serious! Challenge to that of Karachi. Faisalabad is located in central Punjab and has the advantage of being in the cotton producing areas. The cotton therefore does not need to be transported over long distances, saving costs.
An infrastructure has been built in Faisalabad according to the demands of the mushrooming industry. However, the infrastructure is not on the same scale as Karachi's. Power, communications, transport and financial centers all need to be improved. Faisalabad has another advantage; since it is located in the cotton belt, it is able to attract a considerable labor force, as the areas surrounding Faisalabad are the most heavily populated of Pakistan. Faisalabad caters to a sufficiently large local market and the rest of the Punjab as well.
The major disadvantage is in the distance from the port for export of finished products and for import of machinery. Faisalabad is fast making its mark in the world market as its textile mills are producing high quality bed linen, cotton hosiery, knitwear and towels. The textile industry in Faisalabad employs large numbers of graduates from the colleges of art and design, who compete with each other in producing better goods.
