For centuries legal philosphers have tried to define law. In areas such as science no one has asked questions like what is chemistry? It is with law that one wonders 'what is law'. Law is something that is difficult to define yet very easy to give examples of. For instance 'do not kill' and 'do not steal' are examples of law. Proffessor John Austin has given us a definition of law. He says that law is the command of the sovereign whom the bulk of the population obeys and who obeys no one.

In the event of disobedience, sanction follows. This would mean that if in America Bush is the soverign, his orders would be laws. Professor Hart has given us a definition in terms of rules. He says that law is a combination of primary and secondary rules. It is true that when we think of law we think of rules. But then what exactly are rules? The quest for defining law continues. As we read different philosphers we find different defintions of law and so we can conclude that law is an abstract term very difficult to define.
