How To Deal With My Dog's Fear Of Thunder, Fireworks Ect.?

My dog, 'Splotch' is afraid of thunder, fireworks, gunshots, ect. When she hears them, she tries to climb up on my shoulders. (a real trick for a 100 lb. Pitbull) How do I deal? I feel like I'm reinforcing the fear by coddling her, but she's such a nelly that I can't just be passive about it. I know better than to scold her, but it's a little frustrating wearing a pitbull hat everytime....

It's not that unusual for dogs to be frightened of the things you mentioned.  The noises are loud and startling.  One of our dogs never got over it.  She would hide under a bed or a corner of the kitchen.  My sister has a pit bull that's afraid of the vacuum cleaner.  She took off like a shot when the cardboard from a roll of paper towels fell on the floor.  Maybe you could use her as a scarf:)

I have communicated with a lot of dog owners and found that the best things for their dogs is to get a tranquelizer from a local vet.  Some dogs just can't accept fireworks or the such.  For the 4th of July they get the meds, it's like a tylenol pm for a human, but do not give your dog human medicine.  Talk to your vet.
