When Writing A Picture Book, Who Should I Take Into Account More, The Children Or The Parents?

Answer Question

Well parents will obviously be the ones who decide what is appropriate for their children, so you need to create something which parents will find suitable and entertaining for their child. Picture books need to appeal to the parent as well as the child because they too will need entertaining when they come to reading the story out to their child. If a parent sees that a story is funny and easy enough for their child to understand then they will go for it.

You need to keep both parents and children in mind when writing a picture book. Perhaps to get an idea of a good picture book, you could take a look at existing ones, or try reading out your own picture to parents and children to see what they think. Perhaps asking people who aren't in your family is a good idea, because then their view won't be biased.

There are many helpful books which you can use to help you gain tips for writing for children. The Children's Writers' and Artists' contains some very useful information.

It would be both, you want the children to enjoy the book, while the parents approve of it. Like you don't want to make pics that might make the child scared. The parents wouldn't be too appreciative.
