    The deserts of Australia cover a huge area of land in Australia. Nearly all the deserts of Australia come under the central and north-western region of the country. The maximum area of Australia is either desert or semi-arid. The combine area of all the deserts put together in Australia is around 1.3 million square miles.

    It covers nearly 44 per cent of the continent. The Great Victorian Desert located in Western and Southern Australia has a total area of 348750 square kilometers. It is completely barren, arid and is thinly populated, it comprises of many small sand hills, grasslands and salt lakes. Due to its arid land there can be no farming activities conducted in this region. It comes under the protected regions of Australia. In the year 1875, British voyager Ernest Giles became on of the first Australians to cross the desert.
